The Spanish Young Horse Championships for young dressage horses took place in Madrid last week. A six-year-old son of Escolar was particularly successful.

It is the Hanoverian stallion Elvis. With his regular rider Bernat Barrachina Vaquer, he had already been victorious in the international young horse final in Segovia in 2024, and now they have gone one better in Madrid. Prepared by Olympic rider Claudio Castilla Ruiz, the pair delivered: victory in the final of the six-year-old championships with the only overall result in the “good” category. Including a deduction of 0.5 points for riding, the judges gave them an overall score of 8.09, which was calculated from 7.8 for trot and canter, 8.3 for walk, 8.5 for scope and 8.3 for perspective.

Escolar’s recipe for success

Elvis was born at the veterinarian Dr. Jürgen Bornhorst in Ankum. Elvis’ dam is the Hanoverian mare Lady Locksley by Londonderry-Weltmeyer, full sister to the licensed and S-successful brothers Locksley I to III. Bornhorst had put a lot of thought into the mating with Escolar. “I have beautiful, flowery mares. I wanted to have this movement potential. And Escolar – his canter is not a 10, but a 12 or 13,” he sums up his thoughts.

Especially as he had already had good experiences with the Ehrentusch son. The mating of Escolar with Bornhorst’s Fürstenball daughter Frieda produced a colt in 2015, which was named the champion stallion of the ZfdP licensing two years later under the name El Corazon. El Corazon has since been placed at S level.

Elvis grew up at the Hunnesrück stallion breeding stud. He went to auction there at the age of three. Bornhorst lost sight of him. For the time being. Because perhaps there will be a reunion in August. With his success, Elvis was once again able to recommend himself for the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses, which are being held in Verden this year, after 2024. If Team Elvis decides to compete at the World Championships, Bornhorst would have the opportunity to see what has become of his colt in Verden.
